ECMW

For those of you who don't understand the initialisation it stands for "English Country Music Weekend". Nothing to do with Country and Western but a weekend of largely southern English traditional music sessions. It started in 1976, born of the meeting between Old Swan Band and Flowers and Frolics and ran as a peripatetic event until 1985. Ten years later it was revived in conjunction with the Old Swan Band 21st anniversary and has been taking place around the country ever since.

This year's event was at Whimple in Devon. Organised by Ali Standring, Jason Rice and Jim Causley it was the usual excellent series of mega sessions plus a concert by Devon musicians which also attracted a good local turnout. As in previous years this was a wonderful opportunity to participate in informal sessions with some of the country's finest folk musicians.

An extensive library of photos from previous events can be found on our website.

The 2009 event will be easily accessible for Essex musicians at Ampthill in Bedfordshire. More details will be given in the next issue.
