“Look Out” Masque
| Masque are Russell Roberts and Chrissy Quayle. This debut release, shows a spread of ideas with feet firmly in the world music camp. From the opening track Latin feel of Say It, they move to the instrumental Bodas De Oro written by Manuel Galban, and then head in a totally different direction with Uskudara Giderken, a traditional Turkish piece. For this the vocals are handled by Wendy Herman. The Donal Lunny song April has an interesting arrangement, making it sound more of Middle Eastern origin. Indulgence continues the north Africa/middle eastern crossover theme. The Axe, written by Horacio Salinas is reminiscent of direction that Kirsty MacColl was going in her later work. Vranjanke is a traditional Serbian instrumental, and that in, turn, is followed by Veinte Anos a song by Maria Teresa Vera. Roberts (guitar, bongos, melodica, darbuka, percussion) and Quayle (vocals, flute, alto sax, piccolo, percussion) are augmented by am number of fine players, too numerous to mention, but all credited on the album. This is an excellent first release, which defies pigeonholing, and it will be good to see where they go from here.
Webmaster's note: some of the more exotic punctuation in the foreign song titles was eliminated for ease of web publishing. | ||
